A day at the construction site... Play Sand Recipe.

This Play Sand is somewhat of a cross between kinetic sand and moon sand... It's somewhat "sticky" so you can build it up into sand castles or dirt mounds for a little construction site. I made this recipe to be stored in a 2.5 gallon rectangular storage container so he could play with it at the kitchen table. You can double or triple the recipe to make a larger container to play on the floor with. The ONLY play sand we had available was Quickcrete Play Sand and it's pretty coarse sand. I would recommend using a finer play sand like Crayola Play Sand (you can also get this sand in fun colors). I would guess I spent about $15 on ingredients (I already had everything but the sand) and that includes a 50 pound bag of play sand so we can make this many times over.
Some ingredients vary depending on the type of sand you use so you will want to start with the base recipe and add accordingly.
Play Sand Recipe
7 1/2 cups Play Sand
4 1/2 cups cornstarch
1 1/2 cups oil (You can use olive oil or baby oil. I used half olive oil, half baby oil.)
2 tbsp antibacterial soap (You will likely add closer to 4+ tablespoons)
Start by mixing the play sand and cornstarch very well. Then add the oil and continue mixing. Once everything is saturated, you can add your antibacterial soap.
We ended up adding additional baby oil and antibacterial soap to get the sand to the consistency that I was wanting.
Store Play Sand in an airtight container that is out of reach when it is not in use and supervise Play Sand play time. Wash hands before use to avoid contaminates or other bacteria that can shorten the life of your Play Sand and after use to avoid any skin irritation. I'm not always great at catching Ronnie after playing in it to wash his hands and he hasn't had any issues with it but he also doesn't have sensitive skin. You know your babe best, so obviously be aware of possible skin allergy or reactions from any ingredients that you may include in your Play Sand and adjust the recipe accordingly. Make sure to watch for discoloration or off smell to know when it's time to make a new batch. Ours usually lasts a long time so it doesn't have to be replaced often. It all depends on how it's used.
Enjoy!
